Four local students represent Fairfield Electric Cooperative on youth tour

Student tour nation’s capital

Four local students represented Fairfield Electric Cooperative on a trip to the nation’s capital in June.

Mercedez’ Carpenter and Trace Swann of Fairfield Central High School, Sally Costenbader of Richard Winn Academy and Lauren Huse of Blythewood High School were among 74 South Carolina rising high school seniors on the six-day trip to Washington D.C. sponsored by their local electric cooperatives. The students were selected on the basis of their academic achievements, school activities and community service.

While in D.C., South Carolina’s Youth Tour delegation visited many of the major monuments and memorials, including the Washington, Lincoln, F.D.R and Jefferson memorials. They also spent time on Capitol Hill, meeting with U.S. Senators, Tim Scott and Lindsey Graham. Some met their district’s congressman. The students were also inspired by extraordinary exhibits found in the Smithsonian museums, including the National Air and Space Museum, home of the Wright Brothers’ 1903 Flyer.
